BiodiversityTools for the GDI Biodiversity Objectives

Supporting the CBD’s objectives of conservation and sustainable use is the core aim of the GDI. The following documents provide information on the wider policy context in which the GDI has been established.

Sustaining Life on Earth
For a general introduction to biodiversity and to the objectives of the CBD, a GDI Area manager should refer to this short CBD publication. It makes clear that “it is the choices and actions of billions of individuals that will determine whether or not biodiversity is conserved and used sustainably.” Recognising this, the biodiversity-positive actions of GDI Area managers are critically important to sustaining life on our planet.

Quick Guides for the Aichi Biodiversity Targets
Current information on agreed priorities for biodiversity can be found in this set of guides. The Aichi Biodiversity Targets are part of the CBD’s Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. The Plan’s vision is that “By 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people.” To meet this vision, one of its targets – Target 11 – aims to conserve biodiversity through “effective area-based conservation measures” such as the GDI Registry, Standard & Toolkit.
