GDI

GDIConserving our planet, hectare by hectare

With the increasing pressures on our planet, biodiversity-responsible management needs to be encouraged, recognised and supported. GDI (the Green Development Initiative) facilitates international recognition and support for area-based biodiversity management.

We are establishing a transparent, online registry of areas that are managed according to core objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which has been ratified by over 190 countries. These objectives are to conserve biodiversity and use it sustainably. The GDI is based on the CBD recognition that:

“The fundamental requirement for the conservation of biological diversity is the in-situ conservation of ecosystems and natural habitats and the maintenance and recovery of viable populations of species in their natural surroundings.”

Get involved!

The pilot GDI Registry will be launched soon and we are looking for pilot GDI Areas.
